Here you will find some short essays I have written. I hope you enjoy them.
Power and Limitations
We are all beings of great power. Each of us has the power of life and death. At the
core of each of our souls is the connection with Deity (God/dess, The Is, Creator,
Wakan Tanka, whatever name and personality you choose to bestow upon It), which allows us
this power. We have the ability to bring new life into the world through the
conception/birth process. We have the ability to preserve a life through modern medical
technology, as well as old methods (such as soul retrieval and other shamanic practices).
But we also have the power to bring death. We can do this with guns, bombs, knives, or
our bare hands. We can bring death to others or ourselves. We can choose the moment and
circumstance of our own deaths, or that of others. This seems pretty "god-like" to me...
The other aspect of this is limitation. We actually choose our own limitations to prevent
ourselves from becoming "gods". This choice helps to teach us humility. It is the basis
for our humanity. Sometimes our limitation is for our own benefit, sometimes for the
benefit of others. Let me give an example...
If you have a physical limitation, such as poor eyesight, your other senses and abilities
will compensate for the loss. Your hearing will be more acute than mine, your sense of
smell far more developed. But at the same time, you will teach others to appreciate their
own sense of vision, and the beauty of the world around them.
Suppose a child is born with a severe mental disability, and will require that someone
else provide all her care for the rest of her life. What has that child learned? Perhaps
her Soul has learned to trust that others will care for her when she cannot care for
herself, and to accept love as it is offered. But perhaps far more important is the lesson
her parents or caregivers learn; the lesson of unconditional love.
We each have our lessons to learn during life. We each have abilities of which we are
unaware until we are tested. When I was younger, I never thought I'd survive some of the
events of my life, but I have. I am far stronger than I know. And this life is becoming
the adventure I always knew it could be.
I am grateful for all that I have, and for all that I am. I am grateful for the lessons
of the past, and the potential for the future. I Walk with Beauty above me, below me,
before and behind me, beside me and within me. I am filled with joy and love.
