Affirmations
The more I read about affirmations, the more I understand the spiritual
"operating system" behind why and how they work. There are very few
rules to using affirmations, but it is important to understand why the
few rules exist in the first place.
The subconscious mind (SCM for short) is a very strange place. It does
*exactly* what it is told to do, much like a computer program. If you
repeatedly tell your SCM that you want (lack) things in your life, like
love, money or health, your SCM says, "OK, you WANT (lack) this stuff.
Make it so, Number One." Your SCM follows orders to the letter. That
is why it is so very important to be sure to state your affirmations
*ALWAYS* in positive terms, like, "My health is improving every day,"
or "Every day and in every way, I am getting better and better."
When you use affirmations, it is often recommended to speak them out
loud. The theory behind this is that all that exists is linked by
energy (the molecules, atoms and sub-atomic particles, and the energy
which makes those particles move around each other, and which, in turn,
make up all matter). Sound is a vibrational kind of energy, which
travels through air or the vacuum of space, and can affect matter at
the molecular level. If you don't believe me, try attending a very loud
rock concert, and stand directly in front of the speaker stacks. You
will FEEL the vibrations throughout your body, and may even get a
bloody nose or some such effect. So, speak your affirmations to the
Universe for the best effect, but they will also work even if you say
them in your own mind with the conviction of belief.
Here are a few points to remember when creating your own affirmations.
Think of the word SCRAP:
- Short. The shorter the statement, the easier it is to remember and
repeat. You should be able to say the complete statement in one breath
if you were to say it out loud.
- Clear. There should be no doubt as to what you are achieving. If
the final goal requires a complicated series of events, then create a
series of affirmations to take you step-by-step through the process to
your final reality.
- Realistic. You must be able to believe the affirmation in order to
create your new reality. If you don't believe that you are healthy, and
your affirmations are geared toward improving your health, saying,
"I am the most healthy person alive" may not be the ideal choice.
Instead, try something like, "My health is improving every day."
- Assertive. Always state your affirmations in the positive, avoiding
all negative words (no, none, not, never). Negatives are generally
ignored by the SCM, which desires to fulfill the POSITIVE request,
rather than the negative one. Instead of stating, "I have no desire
for unhealthy foods," you might word it this way: "I prefer healthy
foods, even as a snack."
- Present. The SCM only ACTS in the PRESENT. If you state your
affirmations in the future (I will be healthier tomorrow; I will find
my perfect job within a week), your SCM says, "OK, we'll make that
happen tomorrow/within a week." When next week gets here, and you are
still saying "within a week" or "tomorrow," your SCM takes it
literally and waits until "next week" or "tomorrow" to do anything
about it, and of course tomorrow and next week will never arrive.
Some examples of affirmations:
Every day I am stronger and healthier.
I welcome the opportunity for change in my life.
I am becoming my best vision of myself.
I welcome challenge.
I enjoy and appreciate even the smallest blessings in my life.
My affirmations are effective for making my dreams reality.
My needs are met, and I have enough of what I need to be happy.
I am a happy person, and bring joy to my loved ones.
I love myself, and am a loveable person.
You will notice that the above affirmations don't try to control the
will of others. You should never attempt to use affirmations in order
to attract the love or possessions of any specific person. Instead,
you should concentrate on the ability to acquire what is best for you
and your personal situation. Instead of saying, "Billy Jones desires
me more each day," you should try something like, "I am attracting the
best partner for me," or perhaps, "I am the person who my ideal partner
wants to be with." When you try to control a specific person's will or
destiny, you put your own spirit in peril. This is a huge spiritual
no-no.
Finally, you might want to add a statement to the effect that the
Universe provides for you all that is best for you and for others.
Something to the effect of: "The Universe only allows me the gift of
those things that are best for me and for the good of all." Never use
affirmations to cause harm (physical, emotional or otherwise) to come
to another. Affirmations about personal happiness, contentment,
creativity and self-worth are the best type in general, but only you
can know what would bring about those realities. Be gentle with
yourself, and patient. Affirmations rarely work in a single day, but
they can begin to change your perspective and your reality very
quickly.
